Communal Budget to Acquire Software

The Societal Analytics Lab invites all the Lab members interested in acquiring software to do so via our Communal Software budget (up to 500 EUR per year in total).

To be eligible to apply

The applicant needs to be a researcher affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and be already a member of the Societal Analytics Lab. You can become a member here: https://societal-analytics.nl/contact/.

Applicants can only apply for one software license per year of up to 100EUR price. If the license is not “lifelong” then, the Lab can pay a maximum 12 months and maximum budget of 100 EUR per license.

Proposals can only be submitted once. If your proposal was rejected during one specific year, you can try again in subsequent years.

Application procedure and important deadlines

Applicants need to fill out the submission template to request software. Applicants need to promise to share the software with other Societal Analytics Lab members.

Once the form is filled out, applicants must submit the word document via email (analytics-lab.fsw) with the subject “Software”.

The call for applications is open the whole year. However, keep in mind that during January and August, we are very likely to be on holidays!

Evaluation procedure

The Societal Analytics Lab will allocate the 500EUR as the software requests arrive. So, first-come-first-serve.

Applications may be rejected if:

  • The software is provided by an unreliable source.
  • The software does not comply with EU regulations.
  • The software infringes VU ethical standards or similar.
  • The overall costs of acquiring the software are more than 100EUR.
  • The instruction on what license to acquire or what link to follow are not clear.
  • The software does something similar to what software already acquired by the Lab or by IT VU do.
  • The explanation on why the Lab member needs the software and how it will be used are not clear, and/or they do not align with the Lab’s goals.
